The story behind Tabachingching’s character design:
Each character I create represents a piece of me. Tabachingching was based on my most heartfelt times since moving to Portland and also the struggles I went through during my childhood. As a young girl, I remember being uncomfortable with my body and comparing myself to the other girls I hung out with. No matter what changes I did, or what clothes I wore, I never seemed to be satisfied. If anything, it angered me more that I barely saw a difference no matter how much I tried to change. Even as an adult, I find myself trying to form myself into something I’m not. To be skinnier in some areas or to grow certain parts of my body that were deemed most “trendy.” I wanted my turnip baby Tabachingching to feel differently about his body. I wanted him to be full of life, to not stagger when looking at the mirror, and to conquer the body dysmorphia that continues to weigh so much of us down. In Tagalog, “Tabachingching” means “chubby.” It was a word that made me scared to gain weight, while also hating my body for being too thin. I guess I thought that If I could create a little guy that wasn’t afraid to strut around his body shown to the world, maybe I’d feel a little better looking at myself behind closed doors.
